Dental cleanings and exams are two of the most basic yet important preventive treatments we provide at our office. Each time you visit our dental practice for a checkup, we will provide a professional teeth cleaning and dental exam to help your smile stay healthy. During your cleaning and exam, our dental team will:

  • Clean your teeth by removing any plaque or tartar (also called dental calculus), which can lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease
  • Floss and polish your teeth for a healthy, bright smile
  • Examine your smile for signs of any damaging dental conditions or diseases

We may utilize dental X-rays to further evaluate your smile and make certain that you receive the dental care you need. Regular dental cleanings and exams are essential in maintaining good oral health, preventing cavities and gum disease, and making sure that any damaging conditions are treated as early as possible.

We recommend that you visit us every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam. We may suggest more frequent visits if needed, and we also encourage you to contact us if you suffer from a dental emergency, pain or injury. To schedule your next appointment, we invite you to contact us today. We look forward to caring for your smile!

What a Dental Cleaning Removes That Brushing Cannot

Good habits at home do most of the work. A professional cleaning handles what is left behind.

Plaque and tartar are different things

Plaque is the soft film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. Brushing and cleaning between the teeth removes most of it. Anything left behind hardens into tartar, a mineralized deposit that bonds to the tooth surface and cannot be brushed away. Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed with dental instruments.

The places that get missed

Even careful brushers tend to leave deposits in the same few spots, and those are the areas where problems usually start.

Behind the lower front teeth. Saliva glands sit nearby, so tartar builds here quickly.

The outer surfaces of the upper back molars. These are awkward to reach with a brush.

Just under the gumline. Deposits below the gum margin irritate the tissue and are invisible from the outside.

Between the teeth. Brush bristles do not reach these surfaces at all.

Around crowns, bridges and crowded teeth. Any edge or tight contact gives plaque somewhere to sit.

What a Teeth Cleaning Appointment Feels Like

For most people a cleaning is a routine, comfortable visit.

During the appointment

You will feel some pressure and vibration while deposits are removed, along with water and suction. It is not usually painful. If your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive, tell us at the start rather than partway through and we will adjust how we work and take our time. Polishing at the end smooths the tooth surfaces so plaque has less to cling to.

Afterward

Your teeth will feel smooth, and gums that were inflamed beforehand may be a little tender for a day or two. Mild sensitivity to cold can occur briefly, especially if a lot of tartar was removed from around the gumline. Both settle as the gum tissue recovers.

When a deeper cleaning is needed

If deposits have collected below the gumline and the supporting bone has started to be affected, a routine cleaning is not enough. In that situation we discuss periodontal treatment, which cleans the root surfaces beneath the gum and is usually done with the area numbed for comfort.

Signs You Are Overdue for a Teeth Cleaning

Gums are a good early warning system. Healthy gums are firm, pale pink and do not bleed.

Bleeding when you brush or floss. This is a sign of inflammation, not a sign that you are cleaning too hard.

check icon

Persistent bad breath. Bacteria collecting under the gumline and between teeth are a common cause.

check icon

A rough or gritty feel along the gumline. That texture is usually tartar.

check icon

Gums that look puffy or dark red. Swollen, tender tissue is inflamed tissue.

check icon

Teeth that look longer than they used to. Receding gums expose more of the tooth and the softer root surface beneath.

Staining you cannot brush off. Coffee, tea and tobacco stains sit on the deposits a cleaning removes.

Between visits

Brushing twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth once a day is what keeps a cleaning working until the next one. If you are prone to decay, we may also recommend fluoride treatment to strengthen the enamel.
